Let's Break Some Dawn And Catch Some Fire! (As Well As Other Books Into Movies News)

Greetings fellow book lovers! And fellow movie lovers! And fellow book-into-movie lovers!
i've got a few links concerning some of your fave books-into-movies projects that are fast approaching so let's get this thing started!

i'll start with all the Breaking Dawn hoopla that has been going down recently because of the sudden appearance of... wait of iiiiiiiiiit..... Renesmee! You know, that fictional vampire/human child that isn't AT ALL real?!?!? Well, to be so fictitious homegirl is suddenly all anyone can talk about. In fact, in case you didn't already know, this week she shares the cover of Entertainment Weekly with her parents and that baby-lover Jacob.

And if that wasn't enough, there's also this teeny tiny teaser trailer that just popped up for Twihards to lose their shizz all over!

GAH, i HATE those motherfucking eyes!!! Is anyone else kinda already sick of the whole Twilight thing? Is it just me? Are you kinda on pins and needles just for this thing to end already? i was so excited for the first Twilight movie to come out but then somewhere along the way i've really just completely lost interest. i blame most of this on Kristen Stewart's face. i mean, you're an actor. Your job is to fucking EMOTE! This is our fifth and final go round with you as Bella Swan so could you please pick another emotion other than your go-to. And by that i mean suicidal. i don't know if you realize this Kristen but for most of this franchise you look like you're always mere minutes away from sticking your head in an oven. i mean, Bella is now a vampire and if i felt like Kristen Stewart ALWAYS looks, i don't think i'd want to live forever. Even if it was with Cedric Diggory. i'm just saying, Kristen Stewart's face is kind of a cautionary tale for those that think immortality is the bees knees.
Anyhoozle, let's move on, shall we?

There's maybe, possibly, perhaps, finally some casting news for Catching Fire. Word around the internet is that Phillip Seymour Hoffman has been tapped to play Plutarch Heavensbee, the new head gamemaker taking over for Seneca Crane.

Check out this first look of The Host, the movie based on the novel by Stephenie Meyer which will be coming to a theater near you March 29th, 2013. i already knew it starred Saoirse Ronan who will be playing Melanie. But i didn't know that the role of Ian O'Shea would be played by Jake Abel. Who is kind of an old pro when it comes to books-into-movies. (He played in  Percy Jackson, I Am Number Four, and The Lovely Bones.) Oh and you might also remember him as the third (and least important) Winchester brother from Supernatural!

Libba Bray has a new book coming out this September called The Diviners and Paramount has already scooped up the movie rights. The description of the book sounds really interesting (New York! Pickpockets! The Occult!) so it could very well make a great movie too. Plus it helps that Libba Bray herself will be adapting the screenplay.

Dissecting The Cover:

This cover is (unfortunately) so very YA. Headless half teens! It's an epidemic, really. Also, after reading this book, I'm at a complete loss for what the title or the picture has to do with the actual story. It seriously makes no sense.

Let's Review:

It's the beginning of junior year for Elise Benton. But instead of spending it in Amherst, Massachusetts like usual, she and her 3 sisters are uprooted and plopped down in Los Angeles.
Elise, her older sister Juliana and their 14 year old sister Layla will attend the exclusive Coral Tree Prep, a private school where their father now teaches math and their mother is the new principal. Not a very friend-winning situation.
But when Juliana manages to catch the eye of the charming, popular and rich Chase Baldwin, Elise is introduced to Chase's best friend, Derek Edwards.
Derek is the son of Hollywood royalty and thus ALL the girls in school are hopelessly crushing on him. But Elise is less than impressed with his high-and-mighty act. In fact, she finds Derek's enemy, Webster Grant, to be much more swoonworthy.
But Elise is new in town and doesn't have all the facts. And at Coral Tree Prep, things are far from what they seem.

Here's What I Think:

I was all set to like this book. For one thing, it's written by Claire LaZebnik, an author whose chick-lit I totally dig. And two, it's a retelling of Pride and Prejudice which is one of my all-time fave books.
But I just couldn't connect with this story. The characters seemed a little too sweetie-sweet and too gee-golly-willikers for my taste, especially since this book was supposed to be a modern take on an old classic. That was my problem with the dialogue too.  The way the characters spoke to one another didn't seem authentically teenager-y to me.
There wasn't much (or any, really) cussing which I think is bullshit. I mean, what teenager doesn't cuss? At least once in awhile? Especially when the people you're dealing with act like snooty a-holes?
I'm sure some people will find this wholesome and refreshing and a nice change for YA writing, but I'd rather have character authenticity than an adorable lil' world that so doesn't exist. I mean, it's what I imagine living in a Taylor Swift song would be like. It was just a little too wholesome for me.
Another problem I had was that there were a few scenes that seemed thrown in. They didn't really help to move the story along. It seemed like filler to push the main characters together in order to make the reader root for these two crazy kids. Those parts felt a little awkward. Like, and now we're on a class trip, at the beach, at night, looking at the stars, for no apparent reason. This was made even more infuriating when, even with all that ambiance, there were no swoony times to be had. Very disappointing. 
I guess I was just hoping for a little more of that Jane Austen drama. 
Ok, now I feel slightly shitty for basically ripping this book so let's try to end this review on a high note. 
Yes, I had a few issues with Epic Fail but it wasn't all bad. There were some cute parts and some funny moments here and there. I definitely think there are peeps out there that will appreciate the P & P vibe. And I did like the certain little wink-wink-nod-nods to Austen fans, like with the characters names. But, unfortunately, it just wasn't enough for me to really completely fall for this book.

Swoony Times:

There are a few cute moments between Elise and Derek like with the sprinkler and the ping pong. But I never quite felt that Mr. Darcy swoon for Derek. He was a little too stiff and serious for my taste. I mean, you don't have to go all Logan-Echolls-hosting-a-bum-fight but at least loosen up a little.  

Bonus Shizz:

Pride and Prejudice Retell!

Epic Fail is a modern retell of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice with Elise playing the role of Elizabeth Bennet to Derek's Mr. Darcy.
So of course the story is about Elise making snap judgments over Derek's snotty behavior and Derek assuming Elise is like the rest of her family, silly or indifferent or fame-obsessed. In other words, they're too proud and too prejudiced to really get to know each other in the beginning. Then of course they finally see the error of their ways and things get a'swoony.
Another fun bonus for fellow Austenophiles? The name game! Elise Benton= Elizabeth Bennet. Derek= Darcy. Webster= Wickham. Chase Baldwin= Charles Bingley. Jane= Juliana. Layla= Lydia. Kaitlyn= Kitty. And I guess fuck Mary because there were only 4 Benton sisters and nary a one with an M name. I always did feel bad for poor Mary. :(

Evil Eva Welcomes Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Watson And Nina Dobrev To The Trailer Park!

Hey y'all and welcome to another installment of EvilEva's Trailer Park! i've got scads of new Books Into Movies and TV news to dish with ya so let's get this thang started!

There has been some very buzzy buzz about this movie. As a book nerd, i'm only slightly ashamed to admit that i've never read The Great Gatsby. i know. It's all so very shocking. Please don't revoke my membership to The Book Nerds Association Of America (which should really be a thing.) Anyway, if you're done judging me, let me give you some of the deets. The movie is directed by Baz Luhrmann, whom you'll probably recall directed Moulin Rouge (which i hated) and Romeo and Juliet (which i LOVED) and who also really wants you to wear sunscreen. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Toby Maguire. You can catch it in theaters Christmas day. And in 3D to boot! Although, based on the trailer, i don't know what there is to marvel at 3 dimensionally. Except for maybe Leonardo DiCaprio sweating profusely. But it's nice to know you have the option, i guess. ;) 



Another super buzzy movie that has a lot of peeps talking is The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Unlike The Great Gatsby, i actually read this one once upon a time. Although i will admit that it's been a while and i don't quite remember the plot of the book. i do remember not really liking it though. Maybe i'll have to give it a reread before seeing the movie which comes out September 14th. The movie is written and directed by Stephen Chbosky who also wrote the book. It stars Logan Lerman and Paul Rudd. And it also stars Hermione Granger and Elena Gilbert! Or as they're actually known: Emma Watson and Nina Dobrev! And now for some TV news that i find exciting but that didn't start out in book form. 
First, i'm gonna go ahead and sell myself out here and admit that i'm kinda looking forward to that new ABCFamily show, Bunheads. One thing the show already has going for it is it's about ballet which i find endlessly fascinating. Another thing? It's executive produced by Amy Sherman Palladino, the creator of Gilmore Girls which i loved until that whole Logan Huntzberger bullshizz happened. And thirdly, it stars Kelly Bishop aka Emily Gilmore in a role that sounds somewhat like a Miss Patty. And playing her son is none other than Alan Ruck aka Cameron Freakin' Frye of Ferris Bueller's Day Off fame! The show premieres on ABCFamily Monday June 11th at 9pm. Here's a little preview:



And lastly but certainly not leastly, Awkward is FINALLY back, y'all!!! That's right, all the fun, hilarity, made up words and well, awkwardness of teenage life is back for a second season starting Thursday June 28th at 10:30pm on MTV! Who will Jenna pick? i can't wait to find out! Here's a very short promo to enjoy:



This series was so amazingly great last year. It was so witty and fresh and hilarious. If you didn't check it out then you simply MUST check it out now. It's for reals a great show. You should totally be watching it. And, in advance, like Sadie would say, you're welcome.

This is the SEQUEL to DELIRIUM!

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Dissecting The Cover:

Um, I don't get this cover at all. I mean, I get that it matches the second Delirium cover (which also didn't make any sense.) (I'm also a little peeved because even though it does match the second cover, it totally does not match the first cover which is the copy that I own. So now my Delirium series won't look cohesive on my bookshelf. I'm being  punished for buying this book BEFORE it got out-of-control popular! I call shenanigans, Harper Collins!)
Anyway, I guess the foliage is supposed to represent the Wilds? Although there was never a point (nor would there ever be a point) when Lena would be frolicking among the flowers. It makes me wonder if whoever is responsible for these covers has even read the book between them.

Let's Review:

Lena made it over the fence and into the Wilds. Alex wasn't so lucky. Now Lena will have to learn to survive without him. Luckily she meets a girl named Raven who saves her from near-death and introduces her to a whole homestead of people like her and Alex.
People that don't believe love is a disease. People that believe you should have a choice. People against the Deliria-Free America organization. People with a plan to overthrow them.
After what happened to Alex, Lena is determined to join the fight.
With the help of her new found friends, Lena heads back to the city to put their plan into action.
But an incident with Julian Fineman, the son of the DFA's leader, could ruin it all. Or it could completely change everything.

Here's What I Think:

You may recall that I abso-fucking-lutely LOVED Delirium. Also that I've been stalking Lauren Oliver (in my mind only, of course) since reading Before I Fall. So obviously I was completely stoked when Pandemonium, the much anticipated sequel to Delirium, FINALLY came out.
And, of course, Lauren Oliver being the unbelievable author that she is, didn't disappoint this time around either.
Pandemonium starts off with Lena at some school in the present which is really the not-so-distant future because, if you'll remember correctly, last we left Lena she was headed for the Wilds NOT algebra class. The book ping-pongs from chapter to chapter, starting with this future "now," followed by "then" which chronicles Lena's time in the Wilds. It sounds confusing, I know, but give it a few chapters and I promise you'll sink into the story.
Even though this is the sequel to Delirium, it couldn't be more different. Where as the first book was more about falling in love, Pandemonium is more about survival. And while Lena was gutsy in Delirium, this time around she's downright badass. Cos, as it turns out, surviving in the Wilds is tough business, y'all. Especially when you've been sheltered your entire life.
So Lena has to harden herself and toughen up not only to make it through the day to day challenges of her new life but also so she can be ready to seek revenge against the people that took Alex away from her.
While we're on the subject of Alex--- and here's a bit of a SPOILER ALERT and also a mini rant for those that have read Delirium and thus feel my pain--- I CANNOT believe that Lauren Oliver would make us fall so completely butt-crazy in love with Alex only to let him be captured and possibly killed in the sequel! Yes, I know that's how Delirium ended, so I shouldn't be shocked that that's how Pandemonium starts, but I'm an optimist. All those many months anxiously awaiting the release of Pandemonium, my mind turned over the hundreds of thousands of scenarios in which Alex could have escaped, could still be alive, could have made it over the fence and reunited with Lena. But no. He's just gone. AWOL.
Lena thinks about him, sure, but then there's that Julian Fineman fella and that whole "trying to save their lives" thing that occupies her mind a little more. So it was kinda hard for me as an Alex fangirl and a Lena/Alex shipper, to suddenly be Alex-less and having this new guy thrust upon me that I'm supposed to be all swoony over now. But Alex is irreplaceable, y'all. I can't just jump on the Julian train simply because it's currently pulling into the station and my boy Alex is nowhere to be found. I'm completely loyal to my fictitious peeps that way. And crazy. I'm also crazy. ;)
Anyhoodle, other than the Alex withdrawal, Pandemonium is yet another fine feather in Lauren Oliver's awesome-writer cap.
And, my God!, with that ending!, it makes me even more excited for the final book! I can't even begin to imagine how it's all gonna end. But I can't wait to read it!

Swoony Times:

Since swoonypants Alex from Delirium is MIA in Pandemonium (is he dead!? is he imprisoned?! we don't know!) Lena needs a new guy to take her mind off her guilt/grief/sadness/Alex obsession.
Enter Julian Fineman, son of Thomas Fineman, the founder of the Deliria-Free-America organization. And while Julian does sound like a dreamboat being all blue-eyed and blond-haired, and while he does show amazing strength under pressure, and while he does seem to genuinely care about Lena, he's just not Alex. Lena may have been able to move on but I just can't. For me, it's as simple as that. Team Alex 4ever!

Bonus Shizz:

Dystopia!
Dystopias are really hot right now. Sequels to dystopias? Even hotter.
And Pandemonium totally delivers. There's action, adventure, romance, drama. Everything you could possibly want in a futuristic world-gone-to-hell thriller!

Survival Of The Fittest!
The Wilds is a brutal place. You've got to know your shizz in order to survive. Lena's lucky enough to meet people right off the bat that are willing to show her the ropes.
Being a crafty MacGyver-type my damn self, I'm always interested to read about people finding inventive ways to do normal things they can no longer do normally. Plus there's the added bonus of totally preparedness for when that whole zombie apocalypse happens. Y'all come on over. I've got backup generators! :)
(P.S. sorry to tell anyone that hasn't read Lauren Oliver's series yet, but there are no zombies in it. Just an evil corporation that hates love.)

Cliffhanger!
Some people don't care for cliffhangers but I love 'em. And Pandemonium has one hell of a cliffhanger. Obviously I can't (and won't) say more but let me just tell ya--- You. Will. Be. SHOCKED!

Dissecting The Cover:

This cover is very simple which I think is great because the story is very complicated. I mean, it's about cancer, that's some serious biz, y'all. Yet the cover is completely void of anything screaming "Warning: This Is A Sad Cancer Book in Which Someone Will Invariably Die At The End."

Let's Review:

Hazel Grace Lancaster is a 16 year old girl living with cancer, relegated to attend a weekly Support Group with other sick kids lead by an peppy, testicular cancer survivor named Patrick in a church basement referred to as The Literal Heart of Jesus. It's all a little too depressing in Hazel's opinion.
She would much rather stay at home watching America's Next Top Model marathons or reading her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction, for the umpteenth time.
But then a chance encounter at the Support Group changes everything.
Because it's there that Hazel meets Augustus Waters. And Augustus Waters is amazing! He's sweet and funny and oh so charming. So, of course, Hazel finds herself falling in love with him. And Augustus is falling for her as well.
But Hazel is living on borrowed time and the last thing she wants to do is break Augustus's heart. In fact, she doesn't want to break anyone's heart. 
Hazel can't change her unfair fate, but maybe she can finally find something worth living for.

Here's What I Think:

Yeah, Hazel is 16 and has cancer and it's all so totally unfair. It's just a fact of her life. She's living to die. But she's not gonna make a big woe-is-me deal about it.
She's gonna go to her Cancer Kids Support Group meetings and roll her eyes along with her fellow cancer-having pal Isaac as they listen to the ridiculousness spewed by their overly optimistic group leader.
She's gonna sit around watching Tyra obliterate the dreams of young model hopefuls.
She's gonna obsess about the ending that wasn't really an ending of her favorite book.
This is how Hazel chooses to spend what little time she might have left.
Until she meets the devastatingly swoony Augustus Waters.
So Hazel puts her sad story on hold for awhile so she can begin her love story.
Like most teenagers, Hazel becomes consumed with her new crush. Augustus Waters is the air Hazel struggles to breath. and while I found this to be incredibly believable, there were times when I felt like Hazel was kinda rude to other people because her mind was so Augustus-centric. But then I remembered that she's only 16 and this is her first real love and she has this terrible disease and who knows how much time she might have left. So, in the grand scheme of things, a little boy obsession isn't that big of a deal.
And if you're gonna obsess over a certain boy, you could do a lot worse than the swoony-pants charm of Augustus Waters.
Augustus is basically a 17 year old George Clooney with a prosthetic leg.
He always feels "grand." He enjoys breaking cancer-caused tension by cracking jokes. And, HELLO!, he totally gave Hazel his one Cancer Kids Wish!
So, ok, it's pretty easy to see why Hazel went so completely gaga. But that doesn't mean she has to be so short with her mom, who may very well be The Best Mom EVER, and Isaac, who, with his wit and wisdom, completely won me over! In fact, special shout-out to Isaac! Cos while I liked Hazel and Augustus just fine, Isaac was by far my fave!
So yes, this is the story of a young girl with cancer. And yes, it's a story about death. But it's also about life. And love. And friendship. And family. Everything that is most important. All of the things that make life so worth living.

Swoony Times:

Augustus Waters is quite the charmer, y'all. He always knows the right things to say and do. It's no wonder Hazel falls for him.
He makes her laugh. He understands what she's going through. He doesn't get all Debbie Downer on her. He gives her his Cancer Kids Wish. He reads her favorite book so they have something to talk about. *book nerd sigh*
And, perhaps my favorite, Augustus always refers to Hazel by her first and middle name, i.e. Hazel Grace. I just thought that was really cute every time he said it! It doesn't take all that much to impress me. ;)

Bonus Shizz:

Book Lovers!
Hazel Grace is as fangirly about An Imperial Affliction as Augustus is fanboyish about The Price of Dawn. I love reading books about people that love reading books!  It gives me an immediate book nerd connection to them! ;)

Cool Parentals!
Both Hazel's and Augustus's parents are super cool. Given their rotten circumstances, (you know, that whole "their children will probably die before they do" thing) they remain positive and good-natured. And somehow they manage to keep their sense of humor too.

Who Will Direct Catching Fire And Other Books Into Movies Linky-Dinkage

*Yes we're all super sad that Gary Ross is stepping down from finishing off the directing duties of The Hunger Games franchise but lets mourn that shit and get over it because Catching Fire has a director! And it isssssssssss..... Francis Lawrence, the director of such movies as I Am Legend and Water For Elephants. So we'll just have to wait and see how he does. What i'll be even more interested in is when the casting decisions kick off. Who do you think should play Finnick and Johanna?

*There's been a new edition to the Beautiful Creatures cast. Kyle Gallner (aka Beaver, or, excuse me, Cassidy from Veronica Mars) will play the role of Larkin. Still not quite sure how i feel about this book as a movie. What do you guys think?

*The zombie love story, Warm Bodies written by Isaac Marion, will be headed to the big screen soon. i don't know too much about the casting choices yet but i do have two names. Nicholas Hoult will star as R and James Franco's little bro, Dave will also appear in the movie. Don't know who he'll be playing though.

*Disney has acquired the rights to tell the tale of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. As a movie, this might just be awesome. We'll have to wait and see. No news about who might star in the film yet.

The peeps over at Palomar Pictures scooped up the movie rights to Julie Kagawa's vampire dystopian novel, The Immortal Rules before the book was even officially released last month. i haven't read it yet but i do love me a good dystpoian and adding vampires to the mix seems like an interesting choice.

The creator of the saucy, sexy Sookie Stackhouse series (also known as True Blood by TV fans) Charlaine Harris might have another series heading to the small screen. The Harper Connelly mystery series may be coming to SyFy going by the name Grave Sight. i don't have any stars for you yet but this is some news i'll be sure to keep my eye on. (i'm a Truebie, duh!)  

Lionsgate has hired screenwriter Charlie Kaufman to adapt The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness into a movie. This could be pretty amazing. i wonder who will win the roles of Todd and Viola. Got any ideas? Tell me about it in the comments.

This summer Greg Heffley & Co. are back for a third time in Diary of a Wimpy Kid 3: Dog Days. Looks like more silly summer fun. Check out the trailer: 



Lastly, let's all get super hyped about new Pretty Little Liars!!! The amazingly soapy show will be back with its summer premiere starting June 5th. Now that A has been captured, what do you think is gonna go down? Can the girls possibly stay out of trouble this season? Yeah, i don't think so either. But i can't wait to see what kind of dramz our fave little liars get mixed up in next!

*Let's get to the biggest, most exciting, newsest news of all first:
Information about J.K. Rowling's new non-Harry Potter book has FINALLY been released!!!
We already knew it would be a book for adults but now we've been given the title, a little information on the premise and the release date!
The title will be The Casual Vacancy and it'll be a mystery. Maybe even a murder mystery.  The book is set to be released September 27th! Here's the actual link if you wanna check out all the info. And here's a little snippet to help you fangirl it up even more:

*Aw Sookie Sookie now! True Blood season 4 is coming to DVD! Relive (or, uh, live for the first time if you're, like me, too broke to afford HBO) all the madness of crazy witch Marnie, puppy dog Eric, rapey ass were-panthers and the ever yumminess of Alcide! Season 4 will be out May 29th.

*The Mortal Instruments movie got a release date. The movie will be in theaters August 23rd, 2013.

*There's been a change in the lineup for the Beautiful Creatures movie. Jack O' Connell, who was previously tapped to play Ethan Wate, is being replaced "due to scheduling conflicts." An actor by the name of Alden Ehrenreich will be taking up the role. 

* The movie rights to Lauren Oliver's book Before I Fall were swooped up a loooooong time ago but this just in: now the project has a director. It's been reported that Gina Prince-Blythwood (who directed The Secret Life Of Bees. Which was a really good movie.) is in negotiations to direct Lauren Oliver's debut novel/debut book into movie.

*Here's our first little looksie at AnnaSophia Robb as Lil' Carrie Bradshaw. What do y'all think? Is she Carrie enough? She does look semi-bag-lady-that's-been-struck-by-lightning. Which is so very Carrie! So this little project just might work. i personally haven't read the series the show is based on (The Carrie Diaries by Candace Bushnell) so i know shit-all about the concept other than it's Carrie before she moved to New York and when she was merely Carrie Bradshaw as opposed to Carrie Bradshaw. So if any of my blogger buddies out there wanna school me on the haps with this series, please do so in the comments section below.
While we're still on The Carrie Diaries subject, two more peeps have been added to the cast. Chloe Bridges will star as Carrie's nemesis, the incredibly stupidly named, Donna Ladonna. While Austin Butler will play the role of Sebastian Kydd, resident hottie and Carrie's crush.  

*And lastly, here's a new trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman. In this one Kristen Stewart actually speaks, which, mercifully, wasn't the case in the last trailer that i posted for this movie. She has a shitty Britty accent. Which is kind of odd since she's (allegedly) dating a Brit. She should be used to accidentally slipping into a British accent simply because she's (allegedly) boning a British dude. You know, like Madonna.

Anyhoo, K Stew aside, the movie also stars a scary ass Charlize Theron as the evil queen and the giant-headed Chris Hemsworth as the huntsman. It'll be at a theater near you starting June 1st.

Based on the trailer, it looks like it could have some potential. The graphics are pretty amazing. Although it does make me wonder, if they can make Charlize disintegrate into a murder of crows couldn't they do something about Kristen Stewart's perma-constipated face? It seems like that would be an easier challenge of the two. :)

EvilEva's Trailer Park Presents: Books Into Movies Trailer Party

It seems like pretty much every movie coming to a theater near you is one of three things:
a.) a remake.
b.) a boardgame (?!) (Battleship! i mean, REALLY?!?!? WTF!?!?)
c.) a book/series.
Here at Nancy Drew Is My Homegirl, we're committed to that last choice. So here are a few trailers for movies that started out as books.

Stephenie Meyer is coming back to theaters with more of her creepy eye shit! Well not Stephenie Meyer personally but another one of her books is being turned into a movie and it will be coming to theaters with its creepy eye shit. Her non-Twilight related book, The Host is now being made into a movie. It stars Saoirse Ronan and it's supposed to be released March 29th 2013.  




Abraham Lincoln is headed to theaters this summer with his hatred of vampires. Did you guys know that our 16th president totally used to be a vampire slayer? True story. Don't believe me? Just check out the trailer for the movie version of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. It actually looks pretty badass. You better watch your back, Cullens. Starting June 22nd. ;)



It's been nearly a decade since the final Lord of the Rings movie came out. This December (the 14th to be exact) Peter Jackson will finally, FINALLY release the long awaited prequel, The Hobbit. Here's the trailer for it:



Ok so The Dark Knight Rises isn't technically based on a book but it is based on a comic book series so that's kinda the same thing. But i'm really just including it because i'm so super psyched to see it. It'll be Christopher Nolan's last time directing the franchise (so good luck to whoever has the balls to pick up the reins after his epic trilogy is over.)  It'll star the usual suspects Christian Bale, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman and it'll  feature newbies Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy. The final chapter in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy will be out in theaters July 20th.

The Raven isn't based on a book but a plethora of books. Sorta. It's a murder mystery starring John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe in which someone is killing people using methods from Poe's own stories. So of course the police need Poe's help in order to figure out whodunit. Although, based on the trailer, i think ive got this thing solved. It was Jigsaw. You can see if i'm right April 27th.  



Here's the "extended" trailer for Breaking Dawn Part 2. And by "extended" i mean 20 more seconds than the last shitty trailer i posted for this movie. The only difference, you ask? Now Bella's a red-eyed Bambi killer. Amazing, right. (<---i really wish i had a sarcasm font.) Breaking Dawn Part 2 is, mercifully, the final movie in the Twilight saga and will be in theaters starting November 16th.
  


And lastly here's the trailer for Bel Ami which is apparently based on a novel by the same name that was written by someone named Guy de Maupassant. i had never heard of this book before but based on the trailer it's about "a penniless soldier" played by Robert Pattinson "in a world he doesn't know" aka Paris where "his charm will open doors and steal hearts"  and also allow him entrance into the pantaloons of Uma Thurman, Kristen Scott-Thomas and Christina Ricci. So it's basically Robert Pattinson being very un-Edward Cullen-like and sexing it up with ladies young and old in Paris because he's a poor man whore trying to make a buck. So kinda like the Parisian Pretty Woman. Except it's a man. So the Parisian Pretty Man, i guess.

Dissecting The Cover:

I ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY HATE this cover. Just looking at it makes me wanna vom all over myself. I don't even know specifically what it is that I don't like about it. I just really, really hate it.
And after reading the book, I don't really understand how the cover correlates with the story. I don't know if the blue mask is supposed to represent Karou's blue hair or if it's supposed to be Madrigal in her mask at the Warlord's birthday. Either way, I HATE the picture.
I think the typeface of the title is pretty cool. Maybe if the cover had been more minimalist, like just the blue feathers on the back cover, I would have liked it more.
I think it'll be interesting to see what kind of design they use for the sequel. Hopefully not another big ol' masked head that's all up in yo grill.

Let's Review:

Karou isn't your average art student, living in Prague, drawing beautifully grotesque monsters in her many sketchbooks. The monsters Karou sketches are very real. In fact, in many ways, these monsters are her family.
Like Brimstone, her curmudgeon boss/father figure who sends Karou on mysterious errands, collecting teeth from various hunters around the world and returning them to him.
Karou doesn't know what Brimstone does with the teeth or what their significance is but she's somewhat content with being paid in small wishes for her troubles.
Then one day Karou is unable to gain access to the portal that leads to Elsewhere. Because it's now an inferno, emblazoned with a black handprint.
For unbeknownst to Karou, a war has been raging for years against her chimaera family and angels called the seraphim who are responsible for the charred portals. 
When Karou has a run in with one of the seraphim, she's ready for a fight. But she's unprepared for what the angel has to say. The truth about her family, about their war, and the truth about Karou herself.

Here's What I Think:

How can I even begin to review this book? Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a BIG story, coupled with a BIG sub story at the end. And it's all connected.
Karou's story is what starts us off. Karou lives in Prague where she takes art classes with her BFF Zuzana, tries to minimize all contact with her ex Kaz, and, oh yeah, works as a tooth-thieving liaison for her chimaeran boss Brimstone.
Then one day her world is turned upside down when the portal between the regular world and the chimaeran world goes up in smoke and is rendered completely useless, cutting Karou off from the only family she's ever known.
Even though it takes 140 pages to get there, this is really where the story begins. Because it's at this point that Karou truly meets Akiva.
And then shit starts getting crazy. Mysteries start to unravel, the truth starts to come out and then suddenly we're transported to a different time, a different place and a different girl by the name of Madrigal. 
Madrigal is a chimaera that has, ahem, a history, shall we say, with Akiva. 
I actually liked Madrigal and Akiva's story more than his story with Karou. Which is kind of odd, considering. 
You'd have to actually read the book to find out why preferring one girl's story over the other's is odd. It's much too spoilery for me to share. 
Anyway, I liked Madrigal and Akiva as a couple. Their story was this tragically romantic Romeo and Juliet type story. And I'm kind of a sucker for that. 
Again, I know that probably sounds weird to my fellow Daughter of Smoke and Bone readers, but I can't help it. I just liked their story more. 
But, swoony times aside, both Karou's and Madrigal's tales are beautifully written with rich descriptions of this fantastically weird world that Laini Taylor has created. 
As someone who hasn't traveled much, I appreciated the vivid depictions of Prague, Morocco and even the fictitious Loramendi. It helped me sink into the story and allowed me to feel like I was right there with Karou, haggling over teeth with Izil in Marrakesh; through the dark passages behind Brimstone's restricted door; and promenading through the Serpentine with Madrigal and her friends. 
It's kind of funny though, that one of my favorite aspects of the book is also my only gripe about it. 
Why, you may ask? Well because I felt like there were times when the author was a little too descriptive. I mean, I like to visualize as much as the next person, but I don't need 3 whole paragraphs describing a door. Just tell me why Karou is going through it. 
That was my one and only problem with the book. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in this strange world of war torn realms and star crossed lovers.

Swoony Times:

Okay, you guys, I've gotta admit, Akiva is pretty friggin' swoony! He's strong and hardened and intimidating but he's also gentle and sweet and loving. He's kind of the Mr. Darcy of angels.
At the beginning of the book, Akiva is all business because something happened to him (can you say tragic past?) forcing him to shut down his feelings. But then he meets Karou and there's just something about her. Thus Akiva starts to soften and we see the sweet, protective side to him start to shine through. 
There are a few great kissy bits between Akiva and Karou but the hot stuff really smolders when Akiva and Madrigal are together.

Bonus Shizz:

Otherworldly Creatures!
Daugther of Smoke and Bone is full of angels (aka the seraphim) and demons (aka the chimaera.) And Laini Taylor does a wonderful job of describing them, both the exquisitely beautiful and the tragically grotesque.  
I don't know which my imagination got a kick out of more, the angels with their beautiful perfection and their amazing, powerful wings. Or the monsters with their multi-animal mutated bodies.

More casting news for the Beautiful Creatures movie. Jeremy Irons nabbed the role of Macon Ravenwood. Do you think this movie will be anywhere near as anticipated as The Hunger Games is now? i just don't know about this one, guys. 

Get ready to crap your pants, Twihards! Because here is 15 seconds of Breaking Dawn Part 2 which won't be in theaters until November 16th. But rumor has it you can see a full trailer when you catch The Hunger Games movie this weekend! In the meantime, enjoy this little tidbit (if you can. i mean, it's really short.)

Someone has been cast as the rival against Prince Maxon for America Singer's affection in the CW's The Selection. And that someone is William Moseley who will play Aspen, our heroine's "impoverished blond paramour."  William Moseley is no slouch when it comes to the whole "Books Into" thang. He played Peter Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia movies.
i have to admit, i'm getting kind of excited about this series. So far it's got a pretty decent cast, plus the premise sounds really interesting. i really wanna read the book too. It's written by Keira Cass and will hit shelves April 24th.

Lastly, i've got Pretty Little Liars news, A has FINALLY been revealed! And it was kinda lame. i mean, seriously, i was really disappointed. If you didn't see Pretty Little Liars last night and would like to know who the hell A turned out to be, stick around cos i'm about to drop that knowledge on yo ass. If you don't wanna know, then you've officially been Spoiler Alerted.

Spoiler Alert!

Here's the big ol' secret: A is......... wait for iiiiiiiiiiiit........... Mona!
Yeah, just like in the books. Very anticlimactic considering they've been kinda forcing her down our throats majorly the past few episodes, you know what i mean? There were several episodes at the beginning of the season where Mona was pretty much absent and then the last like 5 episodes it was Mona Mania. So that was a little disappointing. But those Pretty Little Liars, they're a tricky bunch because, yes, we did finally discover A's identity but now we've got all these other questions. Like what was up with Jenna and Lucas and that person in the black swan dress that may or may not have been Melissa? And was that really Maya's body? And did anyone else think that Aria looked like Wednesday Addams by the end of the episode? 
Well, all these questions will hopefully be answered next season which starts sometime this summer.

Not quite Wednesday Addams here.

In other non-Hunger Games news, another person i don't know has been cast in that movie i don't care about. i'm, of course talking about the Beautiful Creatures adaptation. The role of Link will be played by Thomas Mann.
Is anyone really fangirling it out over this movie yet? If so, please tell me what you think about the casting choices so far as i didn't really care for the book and thus i don't really care about the movie.

i'll start with the fangirliest news of all:
The cast of The Hunger Games is on this week's (March 9th) issue of Entertainment Weekly!!! There are plenty of new pics including one of Woody Harrelson FINALLY looking suitably Haymitch-drunky as well as a fantabulous new Effie outfit!!! Plus there's a ten-page spread giving you the deets on everything from the soundtrack to what's being left out *cough* Madge *cough*
Also here's a little clip from the movie!!! Which comes out so very soon!!! (March 23rd to be exactly exact!!!) It's one of my favorite moments of Katniss' badassery from the book.



On an unrelated-to-The-Hunger-Games topic, there's also an interview with John Green in the same Entertainment Weekly issue. He talks about his new book (The Fault in Our Stars,) about Vlogbrothers, and what he might write about next.

This is kind of old news but still totally worth sharing, J.K. Rowling will FINALLY write another book,y'all! There's not too much info out yet, in fact, all that we do know is this book will be aimed for adult readers and it'll be very different from the Harry Potter series.
We'll get more information later in the year according to Little, Brown (who will be publishing the book as well as making an assload of money off of it) like what we can expect plot-wise and when the book should be hitting the shelves. So i'll definitely keep you posted. Who else is excited as hell about this news?!   

Awhile back i told you guys that The Carrie Diaries was gonna be made into a TV show for the CW. Well we now have our Lil' Carrie Bradshaw. She'll be played by Annasophia Robb who is no stranger to the "Books Into ..." world as she's starred in Bridge to Terabithia, Soul Surfer and the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But no one remembers the chick that played Violet Beauregarde, EVERYONE knows that Sarah Jessica Parker IS Carrie Bradshaw. So Annasophia has some mighty big (not to mention super stylish) shoes to fill. Will she be able to deliver?
i haven't read The Carrie Diaries so i don't really know what to expect from this show except for the fact that it takes place in the 80s. Which could be awesome or very, very tragic. i might give the show a chance but i'm not on pins and needles for its premiere. What about you guys? Have you read the books? Are you looking forward to the show or do you think it's something better left to the grownups?

i've got more Beautiful Creatures casting news for ya. Like i've said before, this isn't really one of the Books Into Movies that i'm particularly jazzed about but i know that the books are popular and deserve spazzing about for some people so it is for these people that i deliver this news. Emmy Rossum has been cast as Ridley who is a character that i barely even remember. So i don't know if this is a good casting choice or not. If you're fangirling about this book series being made into a movie, please tell me what you think about Emmy in this role.

Lastly i've got some Books Into TV news about a book that hasn't even come out yet. It's called The Selection by Kiera Cass. The book doesn't hit stores until April 24th but the rights to the show have already been picked up by the CW. The premise sounds like a dystopian fairy tale version of The Bachelor.
Ethan Peck will star as Prince Maxon aka the dystopian fairy tale Bachelor. Aimee Teegarden will play America Singer, one of the 35 contestants (?) competing for the prince's heart. And Sean Patrick Thomas will also star on the show as an advisor/etiquette coach who apparently doesn't have a name yet. i always think of SPT from back in the day when he starred in Save The Last Dance. If he adds "dance instructor" to his title i might just watch the shit outta this show!

Watching that clip made me remember how good that soundtrack was. Y'all remember K-Ci and JoJo? My favorite was You Can Do It by Ice Cube though. Remember that one? "You can do it put your back into it." Now try to NOT have that stuck in your head for the rest of the day. :)

Dissecting The Cover:

I kinda like this cover. It's cheery yet disturbing. Creepy yet cute. It's very Pretty Little Liars-esque. Which is probably why I like it.

Let's Review:

Helen Worthington and Lauren Wood were best friends. There was nothing Helen wouldn't do for Lauren.
The Lauren totally betrayed her.
A rumor spread. And Helen's life was ruined. She had to move and change schools.
But now Helen's parents are moving to some hippie camp in Maine and sending Helen to live with her grandma in Michigan. Not that there's anything wrong with Michigan. I mean, other than the fact that Helen's grandma lives in Terrace, Michigan. The very city a shamed Helen fled three years ago. The very city that's still home to Lauren Wood!
At first Helen is totally against moving back to Terrace, especially since it means she'll be sharing a high school with Lauren.
But then Helen has an idea. A wickedly vengeful idea. She won't get mad. She'll get even!
Helen combines her middle name, Claire, with her mother's maiden name, Dantes, and creates a whole new identity for herself. Then she puts her plan into action.
Claire's gonna take everything that ever mattered to Lauren. Her boyfriend, her spot in the school play, her friends, her popularity. 
It's time to DESTROY Lauren Wood! 

Here's What I Think:

Another revenge book, much like the previous Eileen Cook book I read, except this time around it's for the YA set. It reminded me of Mean Girls actually.

 

Claire is dead set on annihilating Lauren Wood. Which makes her a Janis Ian/Cady Heron combo. Like Janis, she harbors hard feelings from way back and wants some serious revenge. But much like Cady, when Claire's plan starts working, she slowly starts to become a little plastic herself. 
Claire is a pretty funny, if single-minded, protagonist. And as a nerd who was also a nerd in high school, I get her lust for vengeance. I think everyone has that someone in their life that they would like to take down, exact revenge on, and completely humiliate. The difference is most of us just do it in our heads. Plot what we would say, how we would say it and how big of an audience should be around for maximum embarrassment. But unlike us, Claire wants the total destruction of Lauren Wood out of her mind and out in the open. She wants to make Lauren's life as miserable as Lauren made hers.
Although one problem I had with the book was the whole reason Claire wants to get revenge on Lauren Wood. Which is, uh, kinda the while premise of the book. I mean, I understand that most teenagers are, by nature, assholes but I find it hard to believe that the whole school would have cared about "the incident" enough to make Claire into a complete social pariah. I mean, it's not like she pushed Regina George in front of a bus or something. ;)
After the first few diabolical plans succeed, Claire should have cashed in her chips, considered her revenge gotten and then concentrated on being true to herself, befriending the awesomely geeky Brenda for realsies, and making out with Christopher while "watching" Vertigo at the old theater.
Because really the best revenge is being so over the bullshizz that you don't even need to get revenge anymore.

Swoony Times:

Christopher is a fairly swoony guy. He's a documentary filmmaker without being douchey about it. He's nice and teasingly flirty but he could have been, I don't know, more. It felt like his character wasn't completely fleshed out, like the book had to be more than just "getting revenge on Lauren Wood," so here's a love interest, sort of. So that was a little disappointing because I think Christopher had the potential to be swoonarific.

I love revenge! I mean, HELLO!, I'm Evil. So I often like books that deal with people going batshizz crazy in an effort to dole out just desserts. But I'm really more of a pranks girl, not a full-on life-ruiner.

i've got more Beautiful Creatures casting news for ya. 
The main characters, Ethan and Lena, have been cast. They will be played by Jack O'Connell and Alice Englert, respectively. i've never heard of either of these actors but like i previously said, i don't really have any investment tied up in this movie because i wasn't a huge fan of the book so i'm not gonna go all Hunger Games madwoman crazy over this casting. 
Anyhoo, Emma Thompson, who i actually do know, as she played Professor Trelawney in the Harry Potter series plus she's starred in countless other movies, has also been cast in the Beautiful Creatures movie. She'll be playing the dual roles of Mrs. Lincoln and Sarafine.
After reading the articles that i linked, i find it a little odd that this movie, which is based on a book about a town in South Carolina, is, so far, starring two Brits and a New Zealander.
Well at least Viola Davis is not only Southern but she's actually from South Carolina too.

John Green's latest novel, The Fault in Our Stars, which just came out in January of this year, has already been optioned for movie-making by the movie-making folks over at Fox.
i think everything is in its early stages right now so the fact that it might be made into a movie is the only news i have for you. This book is currently TBRing it on my shelf and i can't wait to read it. i've heard many, many wonderful things about it.

The last Books Into Movies news i have for you is kinda old Books Into Movies news.
So if you didn't already know, which i think there's no way you couldn't have already known because the TV in general has been playing the trailer for this movie pretty much nonstop for about a month, The Secret World of  Arrietty is out now in theaters. It's based on The Borrowers books written by Mary Norton. i actually wanna see it even though i'm not a fan of this particular kind of animation. i like when things that are usually used for one purpose are made into something new to use for a completely different, tiny purpose. That's why i love the Tinkerbell movies so much! Yes, i think we've already established that i'm a huge nerd. Anyhoosies, here's the trailer for The Secret World of Arrietty.
